Q: My daughter is in college with type I Diabetes. She is on a pump and exercises daily and has difficulty managing her Diabetes around the exercise. Is this something you can assist her with? Despite my medical background, we have struggled to find the optimal approach.
A: I myself am a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and Certified Diabetes Educator/pump & CGM trainer, living actively with Type 1 diabetes since my own diagnosis 25 years ago, at age 15. All of the coaching professionals here at Fit4D have been somehow touched and truly inspired by diabetes. Our goal in this venue is to provide nutrition & fitness coaching education & support to people with diabetes - to empower them to live actively, healthfully and in control of this disease.
As an avid exerciser myself, I can understand the frustrations that the blood sugar balancing act around exercise can cause. Your daughter should know that she is absolutely not alone. Those of us on pumps are often surprised by highs around and after exercise, sometimes more often than the exercise-induced lows! This has much to do with the physiology of exercise & the answers often lie within the fine-tuning of basals around exercise. There is more than one way to "get it right" and it does often involve a bit of "trial & try-over" to find the most optimal approach for each individual. But this is absolutely one of the reasons that Fit4D coaching came to be! So - yes... this is what we do and I do believe that we can support the efforts of your daughter's diabetes management.
I would be happy to speak to you (and/or your daughter) in person, if that would be helpful. You may also sign up directly via our website. I'd suggest a "Try Us" 8wk membership to start ($295), with the option to continue as needed after that.
Fit4D looks forward to assisting you both!
Always in health ~
